Clinical Services - Medico-Legal Reports

Many parents have contacted us seeking a medico-legal assessment and report for their child. Parents want advice and an independent expert report to help identify their child’s individual needs and the most appropriate support, therapy and environment for their child. Parents may be seeking a statutory assessment, review or statement of special educational needs for their child.

What parents contact us for:
  • Some parents request an independent expert assessment as part of a request for a statutory assessment for their child.
  • Many parents request a re-assessment when their child is approaching a change in school e.g. before transferring to primary, secondary school or College/ further education or University.
  • Other parents wish to have their child’s needs re-assessed when approaching an annual review or if their child’s needs have changed.
  • Parents request advice on the most appropriate specialist support or school placement to best match their child’s assessed needs.
  • Some parents seek additional support and provision in both their child’s school and leisure time when all other options have been explored.
What can we do to help?
  • We provide a comprehensive individual expert assessment, profiling your child’s language, social and communication needs. The assessment usually takes 3-4 hours.
  • We talk to parents to gain a detailed developmental history and your perceptions, preferences and concerns about your child. A holistic picture is gained including your child’s interaction at home/ school or nursery.
  • We ask parents to forward all current reports on their child as these provide valuable background information on the existing assessments and advice written on your child. It may be necessary to liaise with other professionals to seek further information where appropriate and your consent will be gained to contact other professionals.
  • The assessment may include working closely with other agencies including voluntary organisations, representatives and solicitors.
  • It may be necessary to make an observation of the child within their existing school and visits to other proposed schools.
  • We complete the medico-legal report with a detailed description of your child’s presentation, assessment profile and overall summary of priority needs. The report will detail a description of the type of environment on balance that would best match your child’s assessment profile. Recommendations are provided on the appropriate environment, expertise, therapy and provision necessary to meet your child’s needs.
  • The report is sent to you and a discuss takes place to answer any of your questions. The report is confidential and you may distribute copies to other professionals as you wish.
  • Medico-legal assessments and reports may take several days to complete and the price will be reflected in the time needed. Please phone to discuss the type of assessment and report you require and to discuss the fees.
