Guidance For Your Child’s Assessment

Your questions answered, so you know what to expect

Why do I need an assessment?

Why me? Do I really need this?

Everyone is different. An assessment helps adults understand your strengths and what’s tricky for you, so they can support you better. Even if you manage most things on your own, it’s nice to feel understood and to know that people are helping you reach your full potential.

What will happen in the assessment?

What will they do?

The assessment can be online or face-to-face, whichever feels easier.

The therapist will ask about your early experiences and what matters to you.

They’ll get to know your interests and hobbies.

You might describe pictures, cartoons, or books to show how you understand things.

You’ll talk about friends, school, work, and what helps you feel comfortable.

Afterwards: The therapist may suggest further assessments or support sessions first.

How will the assessment help me?

Will this actually help me?

The assessment creates a personal profile about you – your strengths, what helps you, and what’s tricky.

This helps adults like teachers, colleagues, and family understand what works best for you.

Adults can adjust how they interact with you so you feel more comfortable and accepted.

You can even help write your plan and say what strategies work best for you.

How does a video consultation work?

What if I do it on a computer?

You’ll get a link to book a day and time.

On the day, click the link for a secure video call.

Some people find this easier because they can stay at home and don’t have to travel.

What if I can’t attend?

What if something comes up?

A parent or carer can email us at office@roundwaycentre.org.uk to cancel or rearrange.

This way, we can offer your slot to someone else and book a new time for you.

Extra Tips

You can ask your parent or carer to sit with you if it helps.

Bring your favourite toys, books, or games – it’s okay to be yourself.
