Guidance for a child

Why do I need an assessment?

Everyone has an individual profile, and the assessment is a way of understanding the person's strengths and needs to better understand and support them. Most people get by in day-to-day life, but sometimes, they need to feel understood and know that adults are working with them to achieve their full potential.

What will happen in the assessment?

Depending on individual preference, the assessment can be carried out using a combination of online videoconference or face-to-face meetings.

The therapist will gain background information on the person’s early development and ask you about the concerns and wishes. The assessment involves a therapist meeting the person, getting to know them and their interests and hearing their views and opinions. The therapist may ask the person to describe some pictures, cartoons, and a book to understand their perception and ask about their experiences with friends in school or work and what helps them the most. The therapist may recommend further in-depth assessment or a period of therapeutic support followed by further assessment.

How will the assessment help?

The individual profile will help make a personal plan so that adults, including teachers, colleagues, and family members, can understand what works well and adjust their style of interaction to help the person feel more comfortable and accepted. The person may be involved in writing the plan to describe the techniques and strategies that work best to help them feel more comfortable.

How does the video teleconference consultation work?

A  link will be sent to book an appointment date and time, and you will receive a secure videoconference link. Videoconference meetings may be more comfortable and convenient for some people as they can remain in their home environment without travelling.

What should I do if I can't attend?

Please email the Roundway Centre as soon as possible to cancel your appointment. We will then be able to offer an alternative date.
